Labia Majora Remodeling
Labia majora, the outer lips of the vagina, can become stretched or enlarged, often with age, following childbirth or weight loss. The tissue can be loose which can lead to discomfort and problems with intimacy. A simple surgical repair can often restore the labia to optimal function and appearance.

What are enlarged labia?
Labiaplasty is a procedure to reshape or reduce the size of the skin which surrounds the vaginal opening. It is also called “labia minora reduction,” “labia reduction,” or “inner lip reduction.” Labia major are the outer lips, which surround and cover the labia minora. Sometimes with age and weight loss, the labia majora can become loose and excess tissue result.
The inner labia, or labia minora are usually not visible unless the legs of the women are apart. Sometimes, the labia are enlarged or elongated or misshapen, and can be seen when the legs are not apart or barely apart. When the labia are enlarged or misshapen, it can cause problems with intercourse, intimacy and lead to embarrassment or self- consciousness. Enlarged labia can be often seen through tight fitting pants and bathing suits. It can cause discomfort when wearing clothes, as well as during exercise and intercourse. Usually this problem is congenital, but can also occur from hormonal changes or childbirth.
The labia majora can also become enlarged and lose their form and normal appearance.
Labia Majora Reduction Surgery: What to Expect
Labia majora remodeling, is an outpatient surgical procedure performed under sedation or anesthesia to reshape the labia majora. From the posterior aspect of the labia majora tissue can be removed and the labia majora remodeled, and tightened. Sometimes fat transfer to the labia majora is also performed to plump the appearance of the tissue.
Fat Transfer to the Labia Majora
In addition to surgical remodeling of the labia majora, often fat can be transferred to help improve the fullness and appearance of the tissue. Liposuction of the abdomen, flank, pubis, thighs can be performed at the same time if indicated to harvest fat, or if no liposuction is needed, fat can easily be aspirated from a small area and no formal liposuction requited. Fat transfer to the labia majora helps most when the tissue is loose and redundant but not to the extent where a formal remodeling procedure is required.
