Following pregnancy and childbirth, so much of a woman’s body changes. Weight loss, exercise and muscle toning regimens can help a woman improve the strength and form of her body following pregnancy. However, many women do not return to their pre-pregnancy bodies.
Changes occur to a woman’s abdominal wall and stomach following pregnancy— stretched muscles, excess skin that does not contract back—and women may desire an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Similarly, the vagina and perineum experience similar changes. Muscles stretch and lose tone, tissue and skin does not contract, and women may be concerned regarding the look and appearance of their vulvar region (including labia, perineum and vagina), as well as the tightness of their vagina during intercourse.
Women may complain that their vagina does not feel as tight as it did before having children, and despite Kegel exercises, they are not able to improve vaginal tone. In addition, women can experience problems with urinary control and have stress urinary incontinence, which is the leaking of urine with coughing, sneezing or exercise.
Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure: What to Expect
Vaginal rejuvenation, or vaginoplasty, tightens the vaginal opening. The procedure can be done using lasers, scalpel or a combination of both.
Vaginal rejuvenation enhances the tone of the vaginal muscles, their control and strength. The goal of the procedure is to tighten both the external and internal vaginal diameter, strengthening the perineal body, which helps to enhance female sexual gratification and pleasure.
Vaginoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under sedation or general anesthesia, and is often performed in conjunction with other female genital cosmetic procedures, like labiaplasty. Vaginal rejuvenation can also be combined with procedures to address stress urinary incontinence.
